May 2016 Meeting

The monthly membership meeting of the Yellowstone Region SCCA was called to order by Regional Executive Dean W. Johnson on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at 5:53 p.m., in the GH&R Law Firm conference room.

Minutes of Previous Meeting: A motion was MS&P to accept without addition or correction the minutes of the March 2016 meeting as published in the April 2016 issue of Fast Times. There was no membership meeting in April.

Treasurer’s Report: Secretary/Treasurer J. Reuss reported the current checkbook balance and noted that all bills have been paid. A motion was MS&P to accept the Treasurer’s Report.

Old Business: J. reported that he has been in contact with Yellowstone Drag Strip and that two events at the facility have been scheduled for 2016 .

New Business/Announcements: Dean noted that with the departure of Chris Brewer, the Region is down to only one Solo Safety Steward (SSS). Since a SSS must be present at all events, it would be prudent to have at least one backup. See our SSS Instructor (J.) if you are interested.

A discussion was held regarding event fees for 2016. A survey of the other three Regions in Montana revealed that entry fees for non-members is uniformly $40. Entry fees for members ranged from $25 to $30. It was decided to keep entry fees for members at $25 and increase entry fees for non-members to $40.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:35 p.m.

Off-Season Wrap-Up

By the Newsletter Editor

The Region will be awarding trophies this year in the form of the attractive, 3-color, 15 oz. beverage glasses pictured below. The glasses–which feature the Region’s new logo–will be awarded to each class winner as determined by the timing software. FTD and PAX winners will only receive one trophy, but runners-up in their respective classes will receive trophies.

The Region has also ordered t-shirts which feature the Region’s new logo. 4″ logos appear on the front of the white t-shirts and 12″ logos appear on the back.  The t-shirts are being printed by Dynamic Designs in Laurel and are scheduled to be delivered prior to the YDS event. Buy a shirt and proudly support your Region! (Pricing to be announced.)

 MyT13B’s Corner

From the Regional Executive

The 2016 season kicks off next weekend with an event at the Yellowstone Drag Strip in Acton, MT. I will be there with my newly-restored E-Modified Mazda RX-7.

The Region’s Facebook page indicates that over 30 drivers plan on attending. That should make for a great start of our season. Looking at the 30-some people who are planning to attend, I see several Mustangs and Camaros that will likely occupy the Classic American Muscle (CAM) classes. In the traditional classes, there should be a wide variety of Hondas, Volkswagens, Mazdas, and a few American sporty cars as well.

Since we are able to run more that one car at a time at Acton, corner workers will need to be extra attentive. Let’s be sure to have a safety-conscious event.

As you will note from the photo below, the bodywork on the RX-7 is finished and painting is complete. I eagerly await the “shakedown cruise” next Sunday!

Race Notes

From the Competition Chair

The Region bids a bittersweet “adieu” to our long-time R.E. Chris Brewer as he leaves the Treasure State and returns to the Land of Lincoln. Chris, his wife Sarah, and his daughter Betty, leave this Friday for Springfield, IL.Chris has worked tirelessly for the Region and deserves our heartfelt thanks and best wishes. I, personally, have learned an incredible amount from the fellow Miata driver. We wish the Brewers well in their new endeavors and hope they will keep in touch!

 The Finish Line

From the Webmaster

The roll-out last month of the Region’s first e-newsletter went fairly smoothly. The only reported glitch(es) related to the newsletter ending up in a few recipients’ spam folders. I will put some sort of warning on the website to alert folks signing up for Fast Times of that possibility. I am also working the kinks (and dead links) out of the new website. The only complaints I have received relate to how long it is taking to get events posted!

On the home front, I have the new 15″ wheels and tires mounted on the $300 Civic. As it turned out, spacers were needed at all 4 corners to fit the 8″ (rear) and 9″ (front) 949 Racing 6UL wheels. The 225/45ZR15 Hankook R-S3s are treadware 140, but since the car runs in X-Prepared, that is not a problem.

I have been making slow (but steady) progress on the new hood, but it will not be ready in time for the first event. However, the Team has decided to enter the car at YDS anyway to begin the shakedown process. As a practical matter, not having a hood in the way while addressing leaks and other  “teething” problems might be beneficial.

After many years of procrastination, I finally installed an E-Track tie-down system in the team’s hauler. I will be using 2″ ratchet straps over each wheel with “roller idlers” to facilitate the low-clearance situation presented by both the Civic and the Z06. I spaced the E-Track so that it should work with both vehicles.

 March 2016 Meeting

The monthly membership meeting of the Yellowstone Region SCCA was called to order by Regional Executive Dean W. Johnson on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at 6:03 p.m., in the GH&R Law Firm conference room.

Minutes of Previous Meeting: A motion was MS&P to accept without addition or correction the minutes of the January 2016 meeting as published in the January 2016 issue of Fast Times. There was no membership meeting in February.

Treasurer’s Report: Secretary/Treasurer J. Reuss reported the current checkbook balance and noted that all bills have been paid. A motion was MS&P to accept the Treasurer’s Report.

Old Business: There was no old business.

New Business/Announcements: The annual discussion was held regarding whether to schedule the first event for April or May. It was decided that May might be more appropriate. J. reported having recently learned that Ben Caudill has moved to Columbia Falls and is no longer a member of the Yellowstone Region. A discussion was held regarding the priority of setting event dates for the upcoming season. Dean provided an update on the car he is building as well as news regarding his new hauler.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:20 p.m.

Media Update

By the Webmaster

The Yellowstone Region has had a newsletter since the 70s.The Newsletter Archive on the Region’s website contains a February 1973 newsletter which predates the club’s association with SCCA. (Also of note is the newsletter’s mimeograph format–remember the smell?)

If you are reading this, you have likely noted a new format for Fast Times. This newsletter was created with a WordPress “plugin” called Mail Poet. Since I assumed the position as Newsletter Editor August 2007, I have used Microsoft Publisher to create newsletters and Microsoft FrontPage to administer the website. At that time, FrontPage was a state-of-the-art WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor designed to hide the details of pages’ HTML (hypertext markup language) code from the user.

However, with the advent of smartphones and tablets with screens of various sizes and configurations, web design needed to change to allow content to adapt to differing display sizes. Web developers began moving away from traditional html editors and toward content management systems (CMS). The Region recently changed to a “WordPress” CMS. Below is a screenshot of the homepage of the Region’s website on a cellphone. The image is substantially different from what you would see on a computer. Software like WordPress manages the content on webpages so that they fit displays in more useable configurations. Log onto the website with different devices and you will see what I mean.

 MyT13B’s Corner

A highlight of the Region’s Year-End Party at the Windmill is honoring the Region’s best. This year, the Dick Hager Memorial “Spirit of the Sport” (Member of the Year) award went to Joel Gruver. Joel started autocrossing with the Region in a Mini Cooper, but has since moved into the “Miata camp.” Joel has recently assumed the position the Chief of Timing and Scoring for the Region. Joel works for Shepherd Stainless and is a valuable member of the Region. Congratulations, Joel!

 Race Notes

From the Competition Chair

The winner of the Grant Cameron Memorial “Driver of the Year” award was new member Orry Boettger. Orry redefined “learning curve” by taking fast-time-of-day at only his second or third event. Orry was driving a Ford Focus ST when he first joined the Region, but has since moved to an AWD VW Golf GTI. Orry is a Staff Sergeant for the Army National Guard and an instructor at MSUB. Did I mention he is fast?

 The Finish Line

From the Webmaster

A (beneficial) by-product of building the new website was cleaning up some of the “dead” links, many of which were contained in the links to neighboring regions and links to pages in the national SCCA site. Take a moment to check out the updated links on the new website under “Contacts” on the menu bar. Corrected website addresses (URLs) are also listed at the bottom right. Curiously, Eastern Idaho no longer uses a traditional website. They rely solely on their Facebook page to maintain their Internet presence and to keep members informed.

Speaking of Facebook, I checked out the progress of Dean Johnson’s“MyT13B” project on his FB page recently. One word that aptly describes Dean has got to be “innovative.”

All Four of them … Full of Hot Air

nascar-tire-6

NASCAR Image Gallery High-speed cars need special tires for better handling and safety. See more NASCAR pictures. John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR

Heat has many effects on a high speed car tire. Many race car teams use nitrogen instead of air in their tires because nitrogen has a much more consistent rate of expansion and contraction compared to the usual air. Often, a half pound of pressure will radically affect traction and handling. With track and tire temperatures varying over the duration of a race, the consistency of nitrogen is needed.

Nitrogen pressure is more consistent than normal air pressure, because air typically contains varying amounts of moisture due to changes in the relative humidity on race day. Water causes air to be inconsistent in its rate of expansion and contraction. So, a humid race in the southeast United States or a dry race in the desert western United States could make for unpredictable tire pressures if “dry” nitrogen were not used.

Nitrogen is also used in the high-pressure tires on large and small aircraft.

Cornering ABCs for speed and safety

The corner is where is counts.

The corner is where is counts.

Correct cornering requires a conscious and repeatable sequence of driver actions to properly enter and exit turns. This sequence must be smooth and flowing and requires regular practice to make it a habit. The sequence is as follows assuming turn entry from a straight section of the course. Take the next Driver’s Education in Lewistown with the Big Sky Region PCA.

LIFT — While driving in a straight line and looking ahead, smoothly lift off the throttle.

BRAKE — Smoothly and progressively apply the brakes in a straight line. Not all turns require use of the brakes.

DOWNSHIFT — Using heel-toe technique downshift to the appropriate gear to maintain torque to provide for acceleration out of the turn. Not all turns require downshifting.

OFF THE BRAKE — While looking ahead to the apex and beyond, smoothly release the brakes when you’re ready to turn in. You generally should not be braking while in the turn, and you want to have given your suspension a brief moment to settle before turning.

TURN IN — Practice ocular driving. Never look where you are. Always look ahead to the next point by physically turning your head. Slowly and smoothly turn the wheel to initiate the turn. Let your hands follow the eyes and use progressive steering.

ACCELERATE — After the turn is initiated smoothly, apply maintenance throttle and progressively increase as you pass the apex and begin to track out to the exit point.

TRACK OUT — As you pass the apex smoothly and progressively unwind the steering wheel. Let the car unwind to the exit point. This is not always needed. Your instructor will explain when and how.

TALK YOURSELF AROUND THE COURSE IN THE FOLLOWING WAY

  1.  Lift off the throttle
  2. On the brake
  3. Downshift
  4. Off the brake
  5. Turn in
  6. On the throttle
  7. Track out

Take the Course and get faster and safer

When you take the course, at the end of the run group, as you slowly return to the paddock, you’ll review the session with your instructor. You will dentify areas and skills you feel comfortable with as well as turns and skills you need to work on.

Be absolutely sure you have the course memorized turn by turn in order.

You’ll use the course map to review the session and talk yourself through each turn over and over. Lift, brake, downshift, off the brake, turn in, on the throttle, track-out. You’ll practice visualizing every turn in order and include any improvements needed … memorize one perfect lap after another. You’ll recognize mistakes and visualize a perfect lap.
