“OVERKIL” was on the license plate of this beauty at the 2016 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas car auction. The 1964 Corvette coupe was powered by a supercharged LS9 engine with approximately 700hp. The information sticker on the car indicated that “Money invested in building this car is north of $150,000.” The car was hammered sold at $66,000 including buyer’s commission.

December 2016 Meeting

The monthly membership meeting of the Yellowstone Region SCCA was called to order by Regional Executive Dean W. Johnson on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 6:00 p.m., in the GH&R law firm conference room.

Minutes of Previous Meeting: A motion was MS&P to accept without addition or correction the minutes of the October 2016 meeting as published in the October 2016 issue of Fast Times.

Treasurer’s Report: Secretary/Treasurer J. Reuss reported the current checkbook balance and noted that all bills have been paid. A motion was MS&P to accept the Treasurer’s Report.

Election of Regional Officers for 2017: There were no nominations for the positions of Region Executive and Secretary/Treasurer, so Dean and J. agreed to continue in those positions for 2017. New member Bill Blacquiere was nominated to serve as Competition Chair and he agreed to serve in that capacity. New member Guy Cox expressed an interest in serving as Chief of Tech this coming year.

New Business/Announcements: Dean reported that he just received his certification as a Solo Safety Steward. A discussion was held regarding the Year-End Party. It was agreed that the event would be held at the Windmill Restaurant as in previous years. J. will contact the Windmill and set up a date. A discussion was also held about scheduling a “clean-up day” for the timing trailer sometime in early spring. Approval by the Board was provided for the purchase of a new laptop computer for timing.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2016

By the Roving Regional Reporter

The Team Owner and I attended the 2016 Barrett-Jackson car auction in Las Vegas on October 13-15. As usual, the event was held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. However, there were two significant changes at the site that affected the event. First, the convention hall had been nearly doubled in size since last year. On the plus side, the auction block was now located in the center of the hall rather than in the adjacent arena building. On the minus side, the expansion wiped out most of the large parking lot for the “ride and drive” events. As a result, “ride and drive” was now just “ride.” However, professional drivers from the Ron Fellows Corvette Driving School and Dodge SRT did the best they could with what they had to work with. Dodge had three cars, a Challenger, a Charger, and a Viper. The first two were both Hellcats. The Fellows Corvettes were stock C7s instead of the usual ZR1s and Z06s.

On the auction side of the house, we scored second row seats on Saturday afternoon. Discovery Channel was about to start filming and they wanted the auction floor to look crowded. One of the first cars across the block was the Wayne’s World AMC Pacer and it sold for $34,000. Schwing!

The auction started on Thursday, so some of the cars that had been sold were already on their way to their new homes. However, many of the cars that had been sold were still in the convention center with the hammer prices on the spec sheets, so it was a convenient way to check the sale prices.

Last, Barrett-Jackson has developed an app for smartphones that I highly recommend. Called “Barrett-Jackson: Beyond the Block,” it allows you to review information for all the cars on the docket, check TV schedules, live stream auctions, and bid on cars from your phone! The app is free.

From the Regional Executive

Christmas came early this year to the Johnson household in the form of a 3-year Solo Safety Steward (SSS) certification from SCCA. Having two SSSs in the Region allows us to breathe a little easier as well as allowing both SSSs to compete at events. SSSs can apply to be SSS Instructors after at least 5 events over 2 years, including a letter of recommendation.

Let me be the first to welcome the Region’s next Competition Chair, Bill Blaquiere. Bill started autocrossing in 2016 with his 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. The autocross “bug” has really bitten Bill hard and he reported at the December meeting that he recently purchased a C5 Z06 that he is building strictly for autocross. Bill is also active with the Glass Reunion Corvette Club in Billings, where he is the Cruise Director and Webmaster. Bill’s wife, Cheryl, is the Secretary of the Corvette club. Welcome aboard, Bill!

Several other new members at the December meeting expressed interest in assisting at event-based positions like tech inspection, registration, and other functions. It will be great to have the help!

We are currently planning the Region’s Year-End Event for the Windmill sometime toward the end of January. More details will be announced as they become available.

Happy Holidays!

This 1964 Fiat Nuova convertible sold at Barrett-Jackson for $16,500. The original 499cc engine was updated with a 650cc engine which reportedly made the car “a pleasure to drive.” The recently-restored, show-quality automobile featured “rare suicide doors.”

 Race Notes

From the Competition Chair

I started out 2016 with the intention of attending the Solo National Championships in Lincoln, NE. I seem to recall some sort of quote about “the best laid plans…,” but mine started going awry shortly after Christmas 2015 with a collision that damaged the Miata. Later, a variety of mechanical failures plagued the usually reliable vehicle; unfortunately, Nationals didn’t happen for me this year.

The event went on without me with a record 1,302 drivers taking timed runs on September 6-9. The 1,300 entry cap was exceeded on August 10, 2016, so the event site needed to be restructured from 91 acres to 121 acres. What’s next? Possibilities include a third course with drivers running two of the three, or two more days of competition. However, the entries would have to push 1,500 for any serious consideration of event expansion to take place.

The largest group of entrants was Street class cars with 468 drivers comprising the highest total ever in Street or Stock classes. Most point to the 200-treadware rule for the highest-ever participation.

On a more mundane note, while you are cleaning up after your New Years’ party, take a minute to check Snell sticker on your racing helmet. Helmets with Snell Foundation SA2000 and M2000 certifications will expire on January 1, 2017.

Pictured below is the “one that got away.” I really wish that J. would have bought me the 1997 Mazda Miata M-Edition with less than 150 miles (and painted dealer hardtop) that sold at the recent Barrett-Jackson auction for $25,300 (including buyer’s commission)!

See y’all in 2017!

Two cars at the Hennessey booth at Barrett-Jackson really caught my attention. The first was the Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE) Dodge Challenger Hellcat supercharged upgrade. Is the stock 707hp of the Hellcat not enough to get your juices flowing? The HPE Hellcat features 1,012hp, 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds, and a 1/4 in 9.9 seconds at 141mph.

Hennessey also offers some help to C7 Z06 owners who need more than 650hp to “get up to highway speed.” There are 4 HPE packages from the HPE750 ($14,950 installed) to the HPE1000 ($84,950 installed). Personally, I think you would be a piker to go any less than 1,000hp. BTW, “installed” means that you have to provide the Z06.

Black Hills Corvette Classic

By the Newsletter Editor

Region members Steve Gruver and J. Reuss recently attended the 45th annual Black Hills Corvette Classic in Spearfish, SD. The week-long event starts in Sioux Falls, SD, and then moves westward to enjoy a variety of Corvette-related activities in the Black Hills. On Friday morning, an autocross was held in a lot on the campus of Black Hills State University. There were three run groups and each driver had four timed runs.

Steve won the C4 class and J. won the C5 class. A new feature debuted at this year’s event called the “Battle of the Pros” A professional driver from the Ron Fellows Corvette Driving School led off each run group and set a benchmark time to beat. Both Steve and J. beat the pro’s benchmark time, so they were eligible to race in the Battle of the Pros. A total of 10 drivers received another four runs each. Unfortunately, there were no “dial-in” times or other form of handicapping, so the supercharged C7s prevailed.

The Region’s next event is Sunday, August 28th at the National Guard Armory on Gabel Road. On the preceding day, the Region will be co-sponsoring a car show at the same location. The principal sponsor is the Marine Reserves. The current plan is to park the timing trailer on site together with a few members’ cars. The Region participated in a car show at Rimrock Auto a number of years ago and it attracted quite a bit of interest.

Chris Brewer’s departure reduced the Region’s staff of Solo Safety Stewards (SSS) to just one. The potential problem that is created is the possible cancellation of an event if the SSS cannot attend. A more immediate problem is that the SSS cannot drive at an events without another SSS being in attendance. With our membership at an all-time high, I am hopeful that (at least) one or two members will “step up to the plate” and become Solo Safety Stewards (and Solo Safety Steward Instructors). Becoming a SSS does not take much time–an hour or two in a training session followed by a quiz. Thereafter, you assist a SSS at a few events before becoming a full-fledged SSS. I look forward to hearing from you if you have any questions or if you are interested!

 Race Notes

From the Competition Chair

Assuming that everything goes well with the Region’s return to the National Guard Armory site in August, plans are being formulated to hold an autocross drivers’ school at the September event. The Region held a drivers’ school a number of years ago at the GM Petroleum site and by all accounts, it was well-received. The drivers’ school at GM Petroleum was held on Saturday evening. Neophyte cone chasers took their first runs with or without ride-along instructors and without a time clock running. Following a mid-event pizza party, the time clock was turned on and participants raced into the night under the lights! Dusk will arrive much sooner in late September, so headlights will probably be required. Many attendees entered the “regular” event the following day. This should be a great opportunity for spouses and friends to give the sport a try in a non-competitive environment.

“Team Owner” and Region member Pat Reuss participated in the drag racing event at the Black Hills Corvette Classic. Races are held on a drag strip just east of Sturgis, SD. The high point of the event was Pat’s 0.0121 reaction time on her sixth pass. The low point was a red light on her seventh pass. Pat drowned her sorrows with a post-race “S’loonshine” at the newly-reopened Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis. Some of you may recall that the “World’s Largest Biker Bar” was reduced to ashes last year shortly after the 2015 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The site has been cleaned up to some degree, but new construction has not begun as of yet.

This is the 100th newsletter since I volunteered to take over the job at the September 2007 membership meeting.  (Time flies when you’re having fun?) I followed in the capable footsteps of prior newsletter editors such as Char Schultz, Kristi Gilliland, Bill Schaff, Lance Peterson, and Dick Hager. The earliest newsletter of which we have a copy is from February 1973.  Yellowstone Drag Strip II

By the Newsletter Editor

The Region’s second event at YDS bested the attendance record set in May by 4 cars. Thirty-one drivers logged an average of 9 runs each for a total of 270 runs. The course was long and fast with the fastest time just shy of 50 seconds–clearly a “Corvette” course!

Appropriately, a Corvette driver (and new daddy), John Bonner, posted fast-time-of-day in his C7 Z06. Riley Kelly–with his Corvette-powered Mazda RX-8–placed second just 0.687 seconds behind John. James’ Reuss’ third-place finish in the $300 Civic bumped Luke Bonner and his Camaro SS off the podium. New Region member David Greenfield, in his super-fast Evo, was fifth. Jim Coons edged out (new mom) Rachel Bonner (driving the family Z06) by 0.110 seconds. Jeremy Vansant, James Papallo, and Tom Litton rounded out the top-10.

PAX scoring put the Bonner brothers on top, followed by Litton, Vansant, andPapallo. A notable PAX finish was Holden Knutson in his Mazda CX-5. Eddie Salcedo placed 11th in PAX scoring, unquestionably aided by much missing bodywork.

The temperatures were hot, but so was the competition. Complete results and more photos are available by clicking here.

The Region recently received a check from the Black Otter Hillclimb Association. After many years of inactivity, the group decided to call it quits and donate the proceeds in its bank account to its closest relative, theYellowstone Region SCCA.

Many current members of the Region are not familiar with the Black Otter Hillclimb, so I asked friend-of-the Region Kristi Mathson to put together the following brief history:

The Black Otter Hillclimb was established in 1959 by a group of sports car enthusiasts and was initially called “The Stairway to the Stars.” The course was in Swords Park and was 1.10 miles in length. The starting line was midway between 6th Avenue North and Airport Hill Road, on what is now named the 6th Avenue Bypass Road. The finish line was at the top just before Yellowstone Kelly’s grave. In 1959, the fastest time was a Corvette driven by Dave Corville.  Dave turned an amazing 1:09.7.  Several years later, the Hill was taken over by the Sports Car Club of Montana (SCCM) and the name changed to the Black Otter Hillclimb. From 1959 to 1979, drivers attacked  the Hill with all they had and eight hill records were set in twenty years dropping the Hill record to 1:01.551.   In 1980, Grant Cameron, a veteran of the Hill, driving a Caldwell Formula Ford, broke the one-minute mark for a new Hill record of :59.654.  Grant’s record would stand for 3 more years before being broken again. The 60 Second Club was established to honor the men and women that could race the Hill in 60 seconds or less.  To date there are 9 drivers with that distinction.  Grant Cameron, Dick Hager, Dwight Gilliland, Larry Althoff,George Bowland, Jim Arnett, Kristi Gilliland, Kenny Richlens, and Susan Hagaman. There are also outstanding records and efforts in 42 other classes by men and women racing anything from a street-driven car to a home-built car to an off-road vehicle.  The Sports Car Club of Montana ran the event until the club’s dissolution in 1986.  The 1987 Hillclimb was to be ran under a different sanctioning body, but organizational problems and road construction prevented it from happening that year. In the following years, road construction at the base of the hill and insurance problems with the event itself kept the Hillclimb shut down. In 1994, a small group of dedicated diehards aligned themselves with the Northwest Hillclimb Association. With major effort, the 29th running of the Hill was a reality!  Once again, the Hill would come alive every August with the sound of race cars and the smell of tires! Unfortunately, due to construction and an interchange to allow traffic between Main Street, 6th Avenue, Alkali Creek, and Airport Road, the last running of the Black Otter Hillclimb was its 39th running in 2004.

 Race Notes

From the Competition Chair

Two “tallish” entries at YDS gave rise to a review of the “Rollover Potential Guidelines” of the SCCA Solo Rules. Unstable vehicles with a high center of gravity and a narrow track, including SUVs, minivans, and 4WD pickups, must be excluded if they have a potential to roll over. Rule 3.1 sets forth two guidelines which do not appear to be mutually exclusive. The first guideline compares the overall vehicle height to the average track width. The acceptable range is 1:1 or lower. In other words, if the vehicle is shorter (less tall) than its track width (the distance between the centers of the right and left wheels), you are good to go! Craig Perkin‘s 1987 Ford Ranger was initially suspect, but his 92″ track put him “in the clear.” See below.

The second guideline sounds more precise, but it is difficult to apply in practice. The guideline provides that vehicles with a “Static Stability Factor” (SSF) of less than 1.30 should not be allowed to complete in Solo events. SSF is defined as 1/2 the track width divided by the height of the center of gravity above the road. While measuring the track width and dividing it in half is easy, figuring out the height of the center of gravity cannot be accomplished during a typical pre-event tech inspection.

The $300 Civic returned to the track at YDS after a few teething problems were sorted. The throttle problems are behind us. The clutch held up for the entire day, but periodic ominous odors suggested that further work might be necessary.  A third-place overall finish byJames Reuss demonstrated that the car has real potential. Team members James and Kaitlin Staebler could not agree on what gears–out of the 6 available–worked best on the long course, however, James’ strategy of leaving the car in third resulted in faster times. The little compact didn’t have the legs to match John Bonner‘s Corvette and Riley Kelly‘s Mazda on the straights, but it obviously held its own in the “twisties.”

May 2016 Meeting

The monthly membership meeting of the Yellowstone Region SCCA was called to order by Regional Executive Dean W. Johnson on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at 5:53 p.m., in the GH&R Law Firm conference room.

Minutes of Previous Meeting: A motion was MS&P to accept without addition or correction the minutes of the March 2016 meeting as published in the April 2016 issue of Fast Times. There was no membership meeting in April.

Treasurer’s Report: Secretary/Treasurer J. Reuss reported the current checkbook balance and noted that all bills have been paid. A motion was MS&P to accept the Treasurer’s Report.

Old Business: J. reported that he has been in contact with Yellowstone Drag Strip and that two events at the facility have been scheduled for 2016 .

New Business/Announcements: Dean noted that with the departure of Chris Brewer, the Region is down to only one Solo Safety Steward (SSS). Since a SSS must be present at all events, it would be prudent to have at least one backup. See our SSS Instructor (J.) if you are interested.

A discussion was held regarding event fees for 2016. A survey of the other three Regions in Montana revealed that entry fees for non-members is uniformly $40. Entry fees for members ranged from $25 to $30. It was decided to keep entry fees for members at $25 and increase entry fees for non-members to $40.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:35 p.m.

The Region will be awarding trophies this year in the form of the attractive, 3-color, 15 oz. beverage glasses pictured below. The glasses–which feature the Region’s new logo–will be awarded to each class winner as determined by the timing software. FTD and PAX winners will only receive one trophy, but runners-up in their respective classes will receive trophies.

The Region has also ordered t-shirts which feature the Region’s new logo. 4″ logos appear on the front of the white t-shirts and 12″ logos appear on the back.  The t-shirts are being printed by Dynamic Designs in Laurel and are scheduled to be delivered prior to the YDS event. Buy a shirt and proudly support your Region! (Pricing to be announced.)

The 2016 season kicks off next weekend with an event at the Yellowstone Drag Strip in Acton, MT. I will be there with my newly-restored E-Modified Mazda RX-7.

The Region’s Facebook page indicates that over 30 drivers plan on attending. That should make for a great start of our season. Looking at the 30-some people who are planning to attend, I see several Mustangs and Camaros that will likely occupy the Classic American Muscle (CAM) classes. In the traditional classes, there should be a wide variety of Hondas, Volkswagens, Mazdas, and a few American sporty cars as well.

Since we are able to run more that one car at a time at Acton, corner workers will need to be extra attentive. Let’s be sure to have a safety-conscious event.

As you will note from the photo below, the bodywork on the RX-7 is finished and painting is complete. I eagerly await the “shakedown cruise” next Sunday!

The Region bids a bittersweet “adieu” to our long-time R.E. Chris Brewer as he leaves the Treasure State and returns to the Land of Lincoln. Chris, his wife Sarah, and his daughter Betty, leave this Friday for Springfield, IL.Chris has worked tirelessly for the Region and deserves our heartfelt thanks and best wishes. I, personally, have learned an incredible amount from the fellow Miata driver. We wish the Brewers well in their new endeavors and hope they will keep in touch!

From the Webmaster

The roll-out last month of the Region’s first e-newsletter went fairly smoothly. The only reported glitch(es) related to the newsletter ending up in a few recipients’ spam folders. I will put some sort of warning on the website to alert folks signing up for Fast Times of that possibility. I am also working the kinks (and dead links) out of the new website. The only complaints I have received relate to how long it is taking to get events posted!

On the home front, I have the new 15″ wheels and tires mounted on the $300 Civic. As it turned out, spacers were needed at all 4 corners to fit the 8″ (rear) and 9″ (front) 949 Racing 6UL wheels. The 225/45ZR15 Hankook R-S3s are treadware 140, but since the car runs in X-Prepared, that is not a problem.

I have been making slow (but steady) progress on the new hood, but it will not be ready in time for the first event. However, the Team has decided to enter the car at YDS anyway to begin the shakedown process. As a practical matter, not having a hood in the way while addressing leaks and other  “teething” problems might be beneficial.

After many years of procrastination, I finally installed an E-Track tie-down system in the team’s hauler. I will be using 2″ ratchet straps over each wheel with “roller idlers” to facilitate the low-clearance situation presented by both the Civic and the Z06. I spaced the E-Track so that it should work with both vehicles.

Media Update

By the Webmaster

The Yellowstone Region has had a newsletter since the 70s.The Newsletter Archive on the Region’s website contains a February 1973 newsletter which predates the club’s association with SCCA. (Also of note is the newsletter’s mimeograph format–remember the smell?)

If you are reading this, you have likely noted a new format for Fast Times. This newsletter was created with a WordPress “plugin” called Mail Poet. Since I assumed the position as Newsletter Editor August 2007, I have used Microsoft Publisher to create newsletters and Microsoft FrontPage to administer the website. At that time, FrontPage was a state-of-the-art WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor designed to hide the details of pages’ HTML (hypertext markup language) code from the user.

However, with the advent of smartphones and tablets with screens of various sizes and configurations, web design needed to change to allow content to adapt to differing display sizes. Web developers began moving away from traditional html editors and toward content management systems (CMS). The Region recently changed to a “WordPress” CMS. Below is a screenshot of the homepage of the Region’s website on a cellphone. The image is substantially different from what you would see on a computer. Software like WordPress manages the content on webpages so that they fit displays in more useable configurations. Log onto the website with different devices and you will see what I mean.

A highlight of the Region’s Year-End Party at the Windmill is honoring the Region’s best. This year, the Dick Hager Memorial “Spirit of the Sport” (Member of the Year) award went to Joel Gruver. Joel started autocrossing with the Region in a Mini Cooper, but has since moved into the “Miata camp.” Joel has recently assumed the position the Chief of Timing and Scoring for the Region. Joel works for Shepherd Stainless and is a valuable member of the Region. Congratulations, Joel!

The winner of the Grant Cameron Memorial “Driver of the Year” award was new member Orry Boettger. Orry redefined “learning curve” by taking fast-time-of-day at only his second or third event. Orry was driving a Ford Focus ST when he first joined the Region, but has since moved to an AWD VW Golf GTI. Orry is a Staff Sergeant for the Army National Guard and an instructor at MSUB. Did I mention he is fast?

A (beneficial) by-product of building the new website was cleaning up some of the “dead” links, many of which were contained in the links to neighboring regions and links to pages in the national SCCA site. Take a moment to check out the updated links on the new website under “Contacts” on the menu bar. Corrected website addresses (URLs) are also listed at the bottom right. Curiously, Eastern Idaho no longer uses a traditional website. They rely solely on their Facebook page to maintain their Internet presence and to keep members informed.

Speaking of Facebook, I checked out the progress of Dean Johnson’s“MyT13B” project on his FB page recently. One word that aptly describes Dean has got to be “innovative.”
